Om, the sacred syllable, the sound uttered by Brahman at the creation of the universe. Put another way, it’s the sound of the Big Bang, the eruption of everything we know into being. It gives me chills, just thinking about it. Om is the intersection of science and religion, of physics and metaphysics.
The silence before and after the syllable is as potent as the syllable itself. This is the kind of thing that is of eternal import. This is the kind of thing that I can believe. The Bible’s simply got nothing on Om.
The rain is on the roof
Hurry high butterfly
As clouds roll past my head
I know why the skys all cry
OM, OM, Heaven, OMThe Earth turns slowly round
Far away the distant sound
Is with us everyday
Can you hear what it say
OM, OM, Heaven, OMThe rain is on the roof
Hurry high butterfly
As clouds roll past my head
I know why the skys all cry
OM, OM, Heaven, OM-The Moody Blues
I like the Devanagari script best, but the Tibetan Aum is nice, too:

Did you see my recent post on phonosemantics? I should have discussed OM there… The meaning of the sound “om” is something like:
From an unknown beginning, the fundamental source arises; its outcome is manifestation.
Sweet!
Why such a thing about the word ‘om’? In my lanuage – Afrikaans – we also have the word “om”. And it actually means nothing – it means nothing on its own. You have to use it always with something – om te sit. It means “to sit”.
At least, I don’t know, wikipedia it or something before you start saying ignorant things.
I did wikipedia it in my language and it means ” to” as in “to eat”.
That word is just as ignorant as my language – sorry.
Do you think you are being clever?
Why would you Wikipedia it in your language? I’m not speaking Afrikaans, I’m speaking English. Why would you wikipedia it in a different language than the one we’re using to talk about it?
Because that word was also – if uttered, not in English.
It’s not a word, it’s a syllable. The definition is not the point. Also, it’s pretty much symbolic, as far as I’m concerned, and the real power is in the space of silence between.
But I guess the fact that “om”is not an important word in Afrtikaans totally invalidates everything I’ve said. And a major world religion.
Kowie, I think you’re just trying to pick at straws in order to be aggravating. Please stop.
my name is naomi, i was named after my great grandmother, the name is origins of hebrews, the people of nature and magic, my name is said to mean harmony, the balance of good and bad, to exist nothing but harmony, my nick name became nomi as a young girl, and turned into omi, and now om in a spiritual sense, to me it means reaching harmony.
