…plus a handful of Roman Catholic, Lutheran and charismatic churches in Germany that I can’t remember. And also Protestant (i.e.evangelical) services at Sand Hill Recreation Center at Fort Benning when I was in basic training.
This list includes only churches where I have actually attended a service, not just churches I have walked around in or looked at.
Bolded churches are churches that I have attended regularly for any period of time (which is vague, I know, but means something more than just visiting once or twice).
I have been a formal member of three churches, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cedar Ridge Community Church, and Central Presbyterian Church. I am not currently a member of any church.
I also have kept a running wish list of kinds of churches that I would like to attend at some point, but I have crossed most of the entries off the list, leaving really only the following:
-an Antiochian Orthodox parish
-a New Apostolic church
-a Pentecostal church (mainstream)
-a Pentecostal church where they handle snakes
And even then, I am at the point where visiting new churches is intolerably exhausting unless I am specifically going to hear a friend preach or something, so the last few churches on my bucket list are probably never getting checked off and I am basically okay with that.
* I have been to bucketloads of different Mormon branch, ward and stake buildings, way more than I could ever hope to count, but here’s a list of the Mormon temples I have attended:
Atlanta Georgia
Manhattan New York
Nashville Tennessee
Orlando Florida
Provo Utah
Washington D.C.
Hi Kullervo,
I have seen you post around the Bloggernacle/Clobberblog a bit, and just wanted to throw this out there. Are you at all interested in Eastern Orthodoxy? I see that in the past you’ve written a few things about Orthodoxy so I just guessed that you might be interested in a small group of LDS and ex-LDS who are interested in Orthodoxy. There’s a Facebook fan page on my blog called “Mormons Discovering Eastern Orthodoxy” (I’ll link to it in my name) and that’s where I’m collecting blogs that explore those topics. Take care, happy blogging.

Syphax,
My brother was actually baptized OCA last year, and I do a fair amount of my personal Bible study using the Orthodox Study Bible.
I have a little crush on Orthodox Christianity and think it has a lot to teach the church in the west. That said, I’m a Protestant pretty much through and through–while the west may have gone wrong in abandoning its connections to the church of the New Testament, I think the east has gone wrong in rejecting the intellectual rigors of the Protestant reformation (and in selectively emphasizing the Church Fathers–why downplay Augustine so much?).
One of the big issues for me also is that there isn’t really a western Orthodox church–the Great Schism was geographical. To the extent that the church in the East has stayed more true to the faith of the apostles, the answer for western Christians is repentance, not conversion. I might want to elaborate more on that in a blog post in the future, actually.
I don’t have a Facebook account anymore, but Saints and Saints looks like a great blog though, and I will check it out.
Hey Mate, I am one that was raised and somewhat educated Irish Roman Catholic (my first degree was a BA in Catholic philosophy, way back in my 20’s) in Ireland (born in Dublin). But, I have been a Protestant and Reformed Anglican for well over 30 years now, but also one who has been somewhat EO friendly too for many years. I hold also two doctorates, a D.Phil., and a Th.D., both English (Brit), and conservative Anglican. I lived and taught theology in Israel in the latter 90’s (not long after Gulf War 1, from which I served as an RMC, Royal Marine Commando – recon & intell officer…retired reserves from there, but had over ten years active – broken time. I was even attached to the American Marine 3rd Force Recon, in the Nam (1968… I will be 64 on the 24th of this month). I am a “mustang”. So Semper Fi! 😉
Hi there, and thanks for stopping by!
